Fellows

The rank of fellow is conferred only upon associate fellows who have attained such eminence in the field of technical communication that the board, by a two-thirds vote of all members, deems them worthy of being singled out as one of the select few who have distinguished the Society and the profession.

Associate fellows may not apply for the rank of fellow; a committee of fellows must nominate them.

Leanne Logan

A former chapter president and now Program Manager with the Mid-South Chapter in Memphis, Tennessee, Leanne was a member of our chapter for 11 years.

She was honoured as an Associate Fellow in 2003 for years of service to our chapter as:

  • Competition Judge,
  • High School Competition Committee member,
  • Nominations Committee member,
  • Nominations Committee Manager,
  • Newsletter Editor,
  • Chapter President (2 terms).

An extremely short list of chapter accomplishments under her leadership includes gains in membership and recognition by the Society with a Chapter Pacesetter Award.

Associate Fellows

The rank of associate fellow is conferred only upon a senior member who has attained distinction in the field of technical communication. A senior member may be elected as associate fellow if the member has been:

  1. active in the field of technical communication for at least fifteen years
  2. a member of the Society for at least 10 years
  3. responsible for important work in the field of technical communication
  4. done notable original work that has contributed to the advancement of technical communication
  5. made a significant contribution to the Society

The senior member is nominated by the chapter and the rank of Associate Fellow is conferred by a two-thirds vote of the Society's board.

Deb Maskens

A former chapter president has been honoured as an Associate Fellow. Deb was a member of our chapter for 13 years. During that time she was Program Manager twice, Nominating Committee member, President, and Past President. Along with Greg Cento, Deb helped develop the Technical Writing Program at Fanshawe College in London where she also taught classes and helped to kick-start the London Student Chapter. Deb was also instrumental in fundraising for the Digital Arts Communication program at the University of Waterloo. Our chapter was an enthusiastic supporter of the campaign.

Distinguished Chapter Service Award

This award acknowledges the work of those chapter members who repeatedly provide exemplary service to the Society through their chapter activities. All chapter members are eligible for this award, with the exception of current voting members of the chapter executive council. When nominating a member, the chapter considers length of chapter membership, consistency of service over the time of chapter membership, and variety of service.

The Quill

Chapter Achievement Award

The chapter achievement award program recognizes chapters for exceptional accomplishments in meeting STC goals. The awards not only acknowledge that the obligations of a properly functioning chapter have been met, but that the winning chapters have performed well beyond expectations.

The award recognizes, in a visible and meaningful manner, chapters that demonstrate outstanding, innovative, and sustained performance in advancing the goals of the Society.

Chapter Pacesetter Award

The Chapter Pacesetter Award recognizes chapters for outstandingly innovative and successful activities. Unlike the Chapter Achievement Award, which recognizes chapters for exceptional strength across many activity types, the Pacesetter Award is designed as a one-time celebration of excellence in the specific activity for which the chapter is nominated.

Heidi Thiessen Memorial Award

This award is presented to students in their 3rd or 4th year of full time study at the University of Waterloo or Wilfrid Laurier University. A panel of judges selects a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner for the award after evaluating an entrance essay, writing samples, and academic standing. In 2000, this award was renamed in memory of Heidi Thiessen, a late member of our chapter who actively mentored many students and young writers in the area.
