General Meeting and Webcast: Understanding Learning Styles

Exciting news! If you've never been to a general meeting, you now have the option of attending one from the comfort of your own home. In our first ever webcast, we have a great speaker on learning styles, and we are are all going to be learning as we try a new method of communicating with our members. For more information, see "Participating Online" below.

In this interactive session, Jane Holbrook of the University of Waterloo shows us that although academics in the field of education argue the pros and cons of "pigeonholing" students into learning style categories, it is generally accepted that designing learning activities and course materials with a range of learning styles in mind can help educators maximize their learner's success. We will look at some different styles, at how learning takes place in the brain, and at some strategies for creating materials and activities that will help a range of learners.

About the Speaker

Jane Holbrook has been the Liaison to the Faculty of Science for the Centre for Learning and Teaching Through Technology at the University of Waterloo since 2001. Her role there is to help Science faculty members enhance their teaching with technology in a pedagogically sound way. Herformal training in the Life Sciences and she has had the opportunity to teach Genetics and Vertebrate Zoology to UW undergraduates face-to-face on campus and online through University of Waterloo's distance education arm for many years.

FREE for STC members and non-members. Refreshments provided.

Parking:

$3 coin entry parking is available in Lot B (entrance on Philip), C (across University Ave), or Lot H (inside Ring Road)

Participating Online

Prior to the meeting date, you need to complete the following steps to set up the link and supporting software for the webcast:

  1. Go to the following link: http://129.97.42.69/Login.aspx
  2. When a screen appears with a user name and password field, enter stc in both fields.
  3. Select Yes on each of the subsequent screens when you are prompted whether you want to install various components.
  4. Continue this process until a screen appears that gives you the option of selecting Watch Television or Video on Demand.
  5. Select Watch Television.
