51st Annual Conference

STC's 51st Annual Conference will take place May 9-12, 2004, in Baltimore, Maryland. All STC members received a copy of the Preliminary Program, which included registration forms, information on technical sessions, conference transportation contacts, and other information designed to help you plan your conference trip.

The Preliminary Program was mailed with the February issue of Intercom, which STC members received in January. The information is also posted on the Society's web site at www.stc.org.

Save up to $861

The Toronto Chapter STC has chartered a bus and secured a lower price on accommodations for this conference and they have invited our chapter to share in the savings. On a double occupancy, you could save $861.

For details about these great savings, go to the Toronto Chapter's web site http://www.stctoronto.org/baltimore.

Don't wait; there is limited seating!

Selling STC to the Boss

The following article appeared in the March issue of Tielines, which is a leadership newsletter that your council receives monthly. Members get cheaper prices to the conference, so it would be worth it to join the STC. Even better, why not see if your company might pay for your membership. They may even consider paying for you to attend the conference, especially with all that you can learn and apply to your work.

Having trouble selling the idea of STC membership to the boss? Get it paid through your corporate training budget. Dictionary.com defines "training" as follows: "to make proficient with specialized instruction and practice."

  • "Training" happens when a chapter workshop on XML helps you develop superior company documents—faster and more efficiently.

  • "Training" happens when an STC telephone seminar teaches you and your colleagues the basics of single sourcing—and thereby streamlines your company’s production processes.

  • "Training" happens when a technical session at an STC annual conference shows you how to develop a usability plan that returns valuable feedback on your company’s product—resulting in a better product and more satisfied customers.

  • "Training" happens when an article in Intercom or Technical Communication shows you how to translate a company Web site—to reach an international audience.

If an STC- or chapter-sponsored event or activity shows you how to improve your company products or processes, that’s "training." Nonmembers often pay significantly more for STC programs, conferences, and workshops than do members. And STC membership provides training with a bonus: a vibrant professional community with numerous opportunities for networking. For information about joining STC or renewing a membership, visit the Society web site. STC helps you make career opportunities happen.
