Volunteering -- a great way to build your resume

by Ted Edwins, Past President

It's nomination time again and your chapter needs you! Every year at this time, our recruitment process for next year's Council goes into overdrive. The chapter requires many willing volunteers to maintain our programs and services. In the past, we have offered:

  • popular workshops with industry-leading trainers such as JoAnn Hackos, Ginny Redish, Jared Spool, and Cooper Interaction Design
  • free telephone seminars for members
  • free monthly meetings with presentations on current topics in technical communication that provide great networking opportunities
  • technical publications and online communications competitions that provide peer reviews of your work
  • an annual Wine & Cheese and BBQ for social activities

The quality of our chapter activities have been recognized by the Society of Technical Communication with four Chapter Pacesetter Awards in seven years. Please help us continue our tradition of excellence by volunteering for council.

Job benefits include: the rewards of being a volunteer, the opportunity to help set chapter priorities, the encouragement of peers as you hone your leadership and management skills, and most of all the pleasure of working with a great bunch of people!

There are volunteer opportunities to fit every schedule. You can volunteer to be a committee manager, a committee member, or just help out with one task. Whatever your level of involvement, we can use your help.

Watch for the nominations email coming to you in early March. All you have to do is nominate yourself or a friend in your email reply. The continued health of our chapter depends on your response. For more information on positions available and to fill out a nominations form online, visit the chapter web site at www.stc-soc.org. Nominations are due by March 27, 2004.
