Your council managed to meet in April and May completely remotely - and accomplished a great deal. April's agenda was short and we simply discussed our options via email. In May we had a little more to discuss and we met using MSN. Debbie is becoming very adept at herding cats! She did an amazing job of keeping us on track and on topic - most of the time! April Meeting RecapJune MeetingWe discussed options for our June General meeting. Ted suggested renting the Princess Theatre and showing the movie Helvetica. Council PositionsLaura (Newsletter Editor) and Lori (Treasurer) have indicated that they will not be continuing on council next year. Some other council members are unsure whether they will do next year. The following is a list of some of the positions that are currently open, some of which were open during this council year:
The Membership Manager position was open this year, but Laura Rainbow Dragon has stepped up to say that she will take this position for the coming year. This demonstrates that a member does not have to live in the area to be on council. Student AwardsLori has submitted the membership forms for the student winners of the Heidi Thiessen Memorial Award. We presented these awards at the April Wine and Cheese meeting. Education DaysAfter we cancelled the education days, we received several emails from people who would be interested in presenting. Unfortunately this is a little late, but we have a possible starting point for next year. Recap of May Council MeetingIn May, we had a little more to discuss so we met using MSN. Debbie is becoming very adept at herding cats! She did an amazing job of keeping us on track and on topic - most of the time. FinancesThe London Student chapter has closed down. Since they are within the Southwestern Ontario territory that encompasses our chapter, we donated seed money and other contributions from time to time. STC Head Office took this into consideration and confirmed we were entitled to receive all the funds that were still left in the chapter's bank account. We've also received the cheque for the publication competition and are awaiting one further membership rebate cheque. Once all funds are received we will be in a good financial position to start our next STC year. Council MembersWe're continuing the hunt for new council members. If you're interested in helping out, contact Debbie Kerr at president@stc-soc.org. Council members were given a list of Southwestern Ontario members and were asked to nominate those people who would make a good addition to the council. Not all council members have completed this process. Upcoming WebinarsWe'll be hosting three webinars over the summer - check the webinars article for more information. Associate FellowWe have started the process to nominate Patrick Hofmann (a former chapter
member - now part of the Australia Chapter) as an Associate Fellow.
Debbie has since contacted him and he is thrilled to be nominated.

About Carol LawlessCarol has been a member of our profession since 1993 and is a senior STC member. She is a founding partner of KCA Consulting, specializing in web usability and usability testing. She's also an independent contractor, when a suitable project arises. She is our official recorder at council. Outside of the STC and work, Carol's special interest is Ancient Civilizations, and still does not tire of visiting ruins (her favourite is Delphi with Karnak a close second). In her spare time, she runs Mom's taxi and loves to read (while waiting for the next taxi run!). |
